Killer Exclusive Indy and Iron Man DVD Sets at Best Buy

I know that last week I just noticed that Iron Man was being released at the end of this month but now, I've not only stumbled upon the Best Buy exclusive for Marvel's latest blockbuster but also one for the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones flick (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

Both sets feature mini-busts created by Sideshow Collectibles, a recent player in the statue and bust arena. Their work has been lauded for its details and quality so I'm sure that both bust will look great. But for my money, I like the more traditional Crystal Skull one instead of the garish ID plaque that they used for Iron Man.

Both $50 retail sets include the 2-disc DVD version of the movie, the mini-bust and a $50 gift cert for Sideshow Collectibles.com.

Things I Learned While Surfing on Amazon - Iron Man Ultimate 2-Disc DVD Edition and Amerie's latest

I don't know how I came into discovering this info but I found out two things over the weekend that I did not know previously while spending some of my birthday money over at Amazon. So, I thought that I would pass this info on to you gentle persons:

Being a casual fan of Amerie, I was wondering when her next release would be (knowing that some musicians take over 4 years to work on a single CD - I'm still waiting longer than that for Q-Tip's next CD to drop). Imagine to my surprise that not only did her label release her new disc named Because I Love It, but that they only released it overseas thus jacking the price over $20 for an import for her homeland fans.

This news makes me jump at the current center of all news, real or imagined - Wikipedia. On her page, there is a non-footnoted entry stating that she split from her old label and has now hooked up with Def Jam/Island and is working with LA Reid, which points to all things good for fans of the late 80s-early 90s R&B vibe. Plus, I'll post anything about her if it gives me an excuse for posting anything with her beautiful visage.

Secondly, did you know that the release date for Iron Man on DVD is at the end of next month (September 30th, to be exact)? Yeah, I didn't either. Again, this discovery begs me to find out more details about the "Ultimate" two-disc set. After some basic googling, here's what is to be included in the two-disc extravaganza:

Disc 1 (Movie):
* Feature film
* Deleted/Extended Scenes

Disc 2 (Bonus Features):
* I Am Iron Man
* The Journey Begins
* The Suit that makes the Iron Man
* The Walk of Destruction
* Grounded In Reality
* Beneath the Armor
* It's All in the Details
* A Good Story, Well Told
* The Invincible Iron Man
* Origins
* Friends & Foes
* The Definitive Iron Man
* Demon in a Bottle
* Extremis and Beyond
* Ultimate Iron Man
* Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man
* Robert Downey Jr. Screen Test
* The Actor's Process (scene rehearsal with cast)
* The Onion "Wildly Popular Iron Man Trailer to be Adapted into Full Length Film"
* Image Galleries

The movie was great and the extras which not only has the traditional "Behind The Scenes" featurettes package but adding a six-part retrospective on the creation and history of the Iron Man character makes this set a Must Have for '08. Below is the image for the two-disc DVD set with a nice surprise included if you move the mouse a certain way.

Hulk versus Wolverine trailer and Marvel Direct-To-DVD Announcement

Marvel is trying their best to keep the good vibe momentum from Iron Man (and to a lesser degree the new Hulk movie) by knocking out Direct-to-DVD animation movies like there is no tomorrow. And according to its released timetable (posted here), here is the latest info on the Hulk Vs. DVD.

Marvel.com has leaked out that Hulk Vs. DVD actually contains two movies - the undercard of Hulk versus Thor and the Main Event (and the one that will turn comic geeks to a puddle of mush) Hulk versus Wolverine. Also, Marvel.com has a quick trailer for the Banner versus Logan match.

The way I see it, this news is a strange mixture of odd pairings and possible pitfalls if done wrong. I'm not quite the comics historian but I don't really remember the Hulk versus Thor fight. I'm not saying that it won't be a good tale but the movie itself is going to greatly overshadowed by the comic anticipation that is Hulk vs. Wolvie.

As for the done wrong part, here's where I might be in the minority. I like my superheroes relatively proportionate. but if you look at the screencap above, it is simply not the case. Hulk has a huge body but has a head that resembles the head-shunked one from Beetlejuice. And what happened to Wolverine's nose? It's about the size of a fingernail. Maybe I am nitpicking but I'm not ready to get in line to buy this one like I am for the new Batman: Gotham Knight 2-disc'r.

Speaking of the trailer, here it is embedded below. give it a once over and let me know if I'm way off base with this one.

"Brooklyn's Finest" writer isn't an Overnight sensation

Yahoo! Movies has a great article on Michael Martin, the new screenwriter of the upcoming Antoine Fuqua-directed "Brooklyn's Finest" and possibly the new writer of New Jack 2. What's surprising about the story is that he's still at his old job even after he sold his first screenplay. It's obvious that he's hasn't become the next Troy Duffy.

For those of you who may not recognize Duffy's name, he sold a screenplay to Miramax and turned that deal into becoming a director of the movie he wrote plus got his band to score the movie. There was also talk of Duffy going in 50/50 ownership with one of Miramax's heads, Harvey Weinstein, in purchasing the bar where he was tending bar. Until his ego went unchecked and he blew it all away.

The movie finally was released with a significantly reduced budget. And there was a documentary crew to catch all of the highs and lows of this epic instant success turned into career flame-out. The movie was Boondock Saints. The documentary was Overnight.

If I would have to pick one to watch, I would go for Overnight every time. Not only is it a great snapshot of the time where the "Indie Movie" scene was blowing up to mainstream success and that you get to see a ton of flannel but it a great character study on how someone should not act once they make it "big" in Hollywood. Success can certain happen overnight but it can be taken away just as quickly.

"Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow" trailer now online

Marvel and Lions Gate have released the trailer for the next Direct-to-DVD video, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow. The movie follows the offspring of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes (mentored by Tony Stark) as they avenge their parents by taking on the mechanized evil of Ultron. Here's the trailer:

These Direct-to-DVD have been somewhat inconsistant from being quite decent (the sublime Doctor Strange and the first Ultimate Avengers movies) to the so-so (Iron Man was ehh) to the awful (Ultimate Avengers 2 was just laughable). Jusging by this trailer, this one has the potential to be, at least, similar to the great Teen Titans series but we'll have to wait until this summer to find out if those first impressions are good ones.

"Marvel"-ous Movie and DVD News

I wish that I had the time to break news stories but unfortunately, blogging doesn't pay the bills and in the immortal words of Latrell Spreewell, "I've got a family to feed." To that end, I read on Newsarama of Marvel's 4th Quarter Profits and appended at the end of the press release was this:

Along with listing the upcoming Iron Man and Incredible Hulk movies (hitting theaters on May 2nd and June 13th, respectively), Marvel reiterated that writers have been engaged for Captain America, Thor and The Avengers films, while Ant-Man has both writer and director. Punisher War Zone is slated for a September 12th release, while X-Men Origins: Wolverine is slated for a May 1, 2009 release.

Wolverine and the X-Men, an animated television series, is slated for a spring, 2009 release, with Hulk: The Animated Series and a property called Super Hero Squad. Iron Man: The Animated Series is slated for a spring 2008 release.

Upcoming direct-to-DVD releases include:

Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow - August 2008
Hulk Vs. - January 2009
Thor: Son of Asgard - September 2009
Planet Hulk - February 2010

And Spider-Man: The Musical? Still in development.

All in all, some great news for the Marvel Zombies out there (and I know one in training who will especially like to hear about the upcoming Super Hero Squad release). And hopefully, Spider-Man: The Musical will still live only in development hell or at least one can hope.

Image of the Day for 08-27-07

Saw this news over the weekend and thought that I would pass it along. Fro what I heard when the event happened back in December, this Q&A was great with parts both funny and informative. Well, that was over a half a year ago so it may not be as informative as it was but I'm sure that the humor still holds up. Probably the best reason to get this DVD is for the extra interviews with the likes of Jeph Loeb, Brian Pulido and You can buy this DVD for $24.95 with the proceeds to go to the Hero Initiative,a non-profit organization that helps comic book creators in need.

On the Horizon - Batman Anime and Wonder Woman Direct-to-DVD releases

Word has come out that the WB Animations Studios are possibly looking to step-up their games in order to compete with their competitors at Marvel and Dark Horse. It was recently leaked last week to the Internet (via Newsarama) that there might be two direct-to-DVD releases involving the Maid of Might and the Dark Knight in the very near future. Of course, as with all leaks, a "No Comment" was issued by Warner Brothers when asked to confirm these images. So, please take these images and associated pitches with a grain of salt:

BATMAN ANIME

Targeted Audience:
Dual (Core fans and tween boys)

Rating:
PG-13 (anticipated)

Release:
2-4 weeks in advance of The Dark Knight film release.

Overview:
Set in the period between BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT, this brand new adventure follows BATMAN as he unravels a mystery over six original stories done in the style of Japanese Anime. Each of the six original stories has been written by a highly respected screenwriter or comic book creator. The talent includes Academy Award nominee Josh Olsen (The History of Violence), screenwriter of the Blade films and Batman Begins David Goyer, and famed comic book writer Brian Azzarello, among others.

The Batman Anime DVD is viewed as a perfect companion piece to BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT. The original stories introduce a number of classic characters from the DC Comics BATMAN universe as well as following up on characters and storylines that were introduced in BATMAN BEGINS.

WONDER WOMAN

On the mystical island of Themyscria, a proud and fierce warrior race of Amazons have raised a daughter of untold beauty, grace and strength – Princess Diana. When and army fighter pilot, Steve Trevor crash-lands on the island, the rebellious and headstrong Diana defies Amazonian law by accompanying Trevor back to civilization. Meanwhile, Ares (the god of War) has escaped his imprisonment at the hands of the Amazonians and has decided to exact his revenge using the mystical “Hand of Rage,” an ancient artifact with the power to raise armies from the dead and infuse them with a thirst for blood. Ares intends to start a world war that will not only last for centuries – but will wipe out every living being on the planet, starting with the Amazons! It is up to Princess Diana to save her people and the world – by using her gifts and becoming the ultimate Wonder Woman!

Wonder Woman stars in this next installment of the DC Universe series of original animated movies!

Target: Males 18+, women 18+, and girls 9-17.

Proposed rating: PG-13

DVD street date: Q4 2008/Q1 2009

My Name Is Earl Season 2 cover art is released

Just a quick hitter today...

FOX Home Entertainment has announced that My Name Is Earl Season 2 will be available for purchase on September 25th. They also released the cover art for the DVD (pictured below):

While you come to expect some bonus features like the traditional Deleted Scenes when buying a season set, the Commentary Tracks will probably make this set one to watch over and over. For this season, some of the commentators are the standard fare like the lead actor (Jason Lee), the co-star (Ethan Suplee), and the show creator (Greg Garcia).

But then you get people like Giovanni Ribisi, Amy Sedaris, Tim Stack, Beau Bridges and even a couple of fans of the show to lay down some voice work about the shows. That's making the package a whole lot sweeter. Plus, it's a very subtle way to get people like me who will watch these shows once they're syndicated to buy the DVDs when they're relased. Also, this season really brought the funny with the COPS episode, the Foreign Exchange Student episode, and of course the bittersweet season ender, The Trial. Seems like September 25th will on come fast enough.

Further details about this release can be found at TVShowsonDVD.com

You can pre-order My Name Is Earl, Season 2 from our good friends at Amazon.com

A Fanatic Medley - July 23, 2007

Rather than do one long ass post, I've decided to mash-up a "Fanatic Medley" of the news items that caught my eye over the past weekend and something that is upcoming this week:

  • Boston won the Battle of the Soxes as the Red ones swept the White ones from Chicago. That certainly makes up for the stumbling that they did against the lowly Royals. The downside to this three game win streak (if there is such a thing) is the Yanks practically destroyed the Rays and kept pace with the surging Sox. This AL East pennant isn't going to come easily. Tonight, Jon Lester, 11 months removed from being treated for anaplastic large cell lymphoma, is on the mound and if there a dry eye in Fenway, they're a heartless bastard. Not everyone needs to be a Red Sox fan but for tonight, everybody should be a Jon Lester fan.
  • On the DVD front, The Secrets of Isis - The Complete Series comes out tomorrow and from what I hear, the transfer from the film to DVD was not cleaned up and unfortunately shows its age. Normally, the idea of a grainy or poppy transfer would scare the hell out of me but since this old Filmation classic is finally seeing a DVD release, I'm not going to hesitate buying this one.
  • One of the more recent additions to the DC Comics library has been the releasing of Showcase trades. These books offer a huge value for consumers with a list price of around $17 for over 500 pages of classic black and white content. One of these Showcase books that was released at the beginning of the month was Showcase Presents: Batgirl, Vol. 1. Heidi over at Comics Fairplay gave it a glowing review stating "The Showcase Presents: Batgirl collection is a perfect addition to any collection. If you catch it on your retailer’s shelf grab a copy. It is worth the price of admission to relive the glory days of one of the most daring heroines in DC’s annals."
